UMTC successfully conducted the pilot run of its newly developed Bulk Carrier Operation Course in partnership with Ionic Manila, reinforcing both its commitment to providing industry-responsive training programs that enhance the operational competence of maritime professionals.

Designed specifically for officers and masters serving onboard bulk carriers, the 40-hour course equips participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely and efficiently manage bulk cargo operations.

The training allowed participants to apply lectures, discussions, and workshops to the course's practical and operational scenarios. Additionally, it addresses essential aspects of bulk carrier operations, including the following:

  • cargo planning
  • draft survey calculations
  • grain loading requirements
  • International regulations for solid bulk cargo transportation

Throughout the pilot program, the six participants gained comprehensive insights into handling various cargo covered by the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code. They were also introduced to stability requirements under the International Grain Code, the use of loading computers, and industry-recognized documentation utilized by organizations such as the National Cargo Bureau (NCB) and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

Led by experienced UMTC Senior Instructor C/O Victor Carlos, the trainees developed competencies in planning bulk cargo loading operations, conducting draft surveys, and ensuring compliance with safety and stability requirements.

As global shipping continues to rely heavily on the efficient transport of bulk commodities, the demand for highly competent deck officers and masters remains critical. Through programs such as the Bulk Carrier Operation Course, UMTC continues to support the professional development of seafarers by delivering specialized, relevant training that aligns with international standards, industry’s best practices, and operational realities at sea.
