Every year, the maritime community comes together to honor the individuals whose dedication keeps global trade flowing across oceans. This year, UMTC celebrated the Day of the Seafarer 2026 with a vibrant gathering that united trainees, seafarers, industry partners, and distinguished guests to pay tribute to the invaluable contributions of seafarers worldwide- the Survivor UMTC.

The evening began with an insightful message from President Tony Galvez, who shared the origins of the international celebration and its profound impact on the maritime community. His words set the stage for the event, emphasizing the importance of professionalism, resilience, teamwork, and lifelong learning within the maritime profession.

Following the welcoming message, Managing Director Donald Bautista took the stage, reinforcing the idea that seafarers are the modern heroes of our time and that the global shipping industry keeps moving because of them. He then energized the audience with a lively set of entertainment alongside the band members, in the latter part of the evening, further honoring the seafarers’ dedication to their work.

A special highlight of this year's celebration was the participation of the World Maritime University delegation, which visited UMTC as part of their academic and industry engagement activities in the Philippines. While the visit initially provided an opportunity to observe maritime training practices, it quickly evolved into a more immersive experience as the delegates joined the Day of the Seafarer activities alongside Filipino cadets, trainees, and maritime professionals.

For the WMU, led by Dr. Johan Bolmsten, the event offered a unique firsthand look at how the Philippines celebrates and recognizes the people behind the maritime industry. This Field visit, coordinated by the Maritime National Authority (MARINA), went beyond classroom discussions and facility tours; participants engaged directly with aspiring seafarers, exchanged perspectives, and witnessed the strong sense of pride, resilience, and community that characterizes Filipino maritime culture.

The main activity of the night successfully tested participants' maritime knowledge, problem-solving skills, and teamwork. This segment of interactive challenges enabled trainees and seafarers to collaborate, simulating real-life onboard situations in which deck, engine, electrical, and culinary officers work together as a team. Their knowledge was tested through questions across all departments, and the experience was made more exciting by skill challenges in teamwork and decision-making under pressure.

Challenges were:

These were supported by their respective Head of Department, Section Heads, and Instructors, who checked if these activities were properly executed.

And the champion is determined through the Captain’s Call Round, in which participants answer a question relevant to the maritime industry today.

The night culminated in an exciting awards ceremony where four teams, each comprised of five brave members, were celebrated for their efforts. The champion team walked with a cash prize of 25,000, earning not just the reward but also prestige among their peers.

Training Director Roy Akker capped off the evening by expressing heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and participated, recognizing the dedication, hard work, and sacrifices that seafarers make in their profession.

As the night drew to a close, the celebratory atmosphere continued with a party featuring a guest DJ Lovezy, where everyone let loose and enjoyed the company of fellow attendees. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, camaraderie, and a shared pride in belonging to the maritime community.

It served as a powerful reminder that behind every vessel are committed individuals whose efforts facilitate the movement of goods, bolster economies, and strengthen global connections.

Participants left the celebration with renewed inspiration and a deeper appreciation for their chosen profession. For UMTC, the Day of the Seafarer remains a significant occasion to recognize maritime excellence and to support the development of future seafarers who will drive the industry forward.

To all seafarers around the world, UMTC extends its heartfelt gratitude and respect for your unwavering commitment to keeping the world connected.
